Retracing the Al-Oqilat Routes on Camelback
Category: Documentation and InterviewsBelieving in the importance of experiencing heritage in practice, members of Buraidah’s camel-racing community undertook an exceptional journey in 1414 AH. For three days they travelled by camel to recreate the caravans of the early Al-Oqilat.
The Route:
The journey began south of Ain Al-Otaishan, east of Buraidah, and passed through Qa‘ Mut‘ib, Aba Al-Warani, Al-Sarif, and Al-Bandariyah before reaching Nawazir. Mohammed bin Saleh Al-Salloum organized and led the undertaking.
The journey included a mudhaha midday stop and a mu‘ashsha evening camp. Seated around the fires, the elders recounted the achievements, stories, and enduring poetry of the Al-Oqilat. Participants included Mohammed Al-Mukairish, Sulaiman Al-Jutaili, Mohammed Al-Shuraidah, Nassar Al-Mudhhiyan, Abdullah Al-Tuwaian, Youssef Al-Ardah, and others.
Further journeys by Al-Oqilat descendants followed, passing through Al-Tarfiyah, Al-Rubay‘iyah, Nufud Al-Thuwairat, and Qusayba, keeping this great heritage alive in the memory of new generations.
