The Sons of Ali\u2014their defiance angers every foe; when the hour of encounter comes, no one can stand before them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When the fire of battle raises its torches, woe at the encounter to anyone who opposes them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They protect the homeland's sanctuary and repay its blood claims twofold, ransoming it with precious life on days of war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A land of lions whose deeds bring honor, a land of men who protect it from the enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A land of men whose virtues are many; everyone takes pride in it whenever its name is mentioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A land of men who follow the customs of their forefathers and whose hands reach far whenever a great deed calls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A land of men whose manliness is ancient\u2014the rallying kin of Al-Oqilat, whose reach extends far away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A land of men whose caravans cross the world; there is no country that Al-Oqilat men did not reach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From fertile countries they brought full measures and gave relief to people who awaited them in times of hunger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Najd bears witness and never forgets their favors; they sustained it with provisions of every kind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On distant journeys their mounts grew weary, yet upon fine camels they folded away the farthest lands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Al-Oqilat reached India and Sindh, while in Gaza they roamed throughout its outskirts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was no pleasure tour in search of amusement, but trade through which they bought the necessities of Najd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Their time was occupied in obedience to the Merciful, and their councils drew travelers with the coffee they served.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
People of guesthouses whose doors never closed to a guest, whose serving trays overflowed even in an age of estrangement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The finest and greatest deeds are attributed to them\u2014excellent men whose worth exceeds the highest expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They take pride in their customs and deal honorably; everyone is proud of them and grateful for their efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I raise my voice in their praise, for every fine quality embraces them\u2014horsemen whose battle cries terrify aggressors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This description of their deeds is truth, not imagination; all people relate the stories of Al-Oqilat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I want to inform anyone who does not know Al-Oqilat customs: every line of praise and glorification is meant for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
History recorded their glories long ago, and they became the subject of Arab conversation in every gathering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A people whose sincerity made their deeds shine white, their hearts guided toward goodness by the Lord of all creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They held firmly to their faith and were loyal to their ruler, who fulfilled the aspirations of the homeland's people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was generous to friends and humbled enemies, while his nature rewarded loyal men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He entrusted many positions to men of Al-Qassim, confident in their loyalty and knowing their dedication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They are leaders, and the one who leads a people is their man of wisdom; their deeds raise them to the highest ranks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The gifted and loyal poet Khalid bin Sulaiman Al-Juraish, a descendant of the Al-Oqilat\u2014may Allah protect him:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Al-Oqilat established a history that fills the pages written by its historian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It contains no stain or blemish, but is purer than a pearl brought up from the depths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A young Al-Oqilat lion, son of a lioness; a cunning sheikh of noble stock<\/p>\n\n\n\n He also said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is Buraidah, from the age of our forefathers\u2014never overtaken in a race, like the finest purebred mare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n No city or country can equal it; to the discerning eye, it stands among towns as the finest purebred stands among camels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n God bless it, Arabs\u2014a home of noble men, distinguished in faith, renewal, knowledge, and lineage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Its people hold positions of responsibility; their deeds are worthy and supportive, proven whenever hardship strikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Speak of the westward journeys led by its sons\u2014how many times they mounted their traveling camels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hearing the renown of Al-Oqilat, they set out for Baghdad bearing a reputation that held every head high and never bowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They were riders of horses and pioneers in the camel trade; the market they built for camels was a mighty market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They were known for their love of the hunt, as people attest\u2014some hunted with falcons, while others excelled with the gun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Turn to its poets and the past is rich in glory; look upon the present and you find abundant gifts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Count its merchants and the numbers fill the record, while its farms join one another all the way toward Hail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The signs of development increase each day: projects rising here and fine villas there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I liken it, when its generosity flows, to Haddaj of Tayma, with buckets and ropes lowered into its depths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n All the Arabs come to it, those who know and those who ask; it quenches the thirst of a heart scorched by burning heat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The role of Al-Hassani in distant lands is not forgotten\u2014a role of response and support, radiant as new moons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Abdulaziz founded it firmly upon goodness, leading to all we have witnessed in this age of great celebrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fahd\u2014Fahd, above whom honor is proclaimed\u2014pursues development in every worthwhile field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n With the support of Abu Mutib, ever accustomed to goodness, and of Sultan and his brothers through deeds and evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Across the Kingdom they raised beacons and guidance and protected its sanctuary from every intrusive harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n May Allah strengthen the faith and the sons of those who served the banner of monotheism\u2014with honor and proud deeds<\/p>\n\n\n\n I close by asking blessings upon the master of all leaders, Mohammed, the Messenger and Seal of the Messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ———————-<\/p>\n\n\n\n The poet Al-Lahim said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n We are Al-Oqilat, masters of the tall, strong camels\u2014the pride of caravans while every settled man sleeps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n How often we crossed the unknown reaches of the open plains, pale expanses where wolves howl along their folds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Through resolve and strength we earned a noble reputation beside every valiant man whose worth exceeds expectation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Crossers of the wilderness and objects of longing to noble maidens raised in lofty homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ———————<\/p>\n\n\n\n The gifted patriotic poet Abdullah bin Juraibi\u2018 Al-Rubaili Al-Anazi of AlUla\u2014may Allah protect him\u2014said of the Al-Oqilat:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Let me tell you, who know nothing of Al-Oqilat, and give you a portrait from the lives of these people of glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So that we may know them well through every age, and you may know Al-Oqilat's former deeds and role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A people whose banners stand beside the banner of glory\u2014this is a truth that became a legend in their time<\/p>\n\n\n\n Their history needs no certificates of testimony; their deeds in every circumstance are known and proven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They cared nothing for the hardship or distance of travel; their spirits were patient beneath every difficulty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From Al-Qassim they turned their swift mounts and caravans toward Syria and its distant reaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Or they headed with purpose toward Baghdad, or intended Egypt and the shores of its sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Bedouin greeted them with smiles, and no one could fully describe the people's joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When they returned, they carried heavy loads; the camels brought home everything their backs could bear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Upon those backs came blessings from the Lord, while the people were wholly immersed in celebration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Merchants through the hardest years\u2014the story of their age remains its most fragrant perfume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A people who left their mark upon the page of glory on days when blood surged from the heads of enemies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If we return to the years of old, we find an age in which courage was a necessity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The curved edges of their sharp swords bear witness, blades upon which their enemies' blood was shed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n How many heads they struck down amid the bodies, and how many aggressors vanished from sight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Without those forays, they would not have provisioned the purebred mares, nor would their men have endured such toil upon the frontier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Without the thrust of spears, they would not have sustained the noble mares made bold for entering battle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Upon them they met raids and launched raids, horsemen riding their backs like tigers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the hour when rallying cries find their voices, the birds of ease and peace fly from their nest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The nature of an Al-Oqilat man revives a spirit gone dead; amid the horsemen's clash, he is carried beyond awareness of himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In fighting them you find the wounded and the dead, one noble horse unseated and another brought down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Their hearts are always open to a neighbor, whom they include among them in counsel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He receives esteem, patience, and consideration from them; they are his support whenever his affairs fall short.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They greet the guest first with the finest salutations, their voices loudly calling, \u2018May God welcome him!\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n They seat him upon carpets and cushions, with the coffee prepared exactly to his taste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They bring before him the finest fat-tailed sheep, chosen from the flock and slaughtered for his meal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Or noble young camels, with full cups offered and oud incense sending up its rich smoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They renew the welcome with the sweetest expressions, while each person awaits his turn to invite the guest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A people possessing generosity, chivalry, swift aid, courage, goodness, proud bearing, and ardor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When a stranger cries, \u2018Where are Al-Oqilat? I seek your protection, for time has made me taste its injustice\u2019\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n Each one answers, \u2018Good news of honor and safety. Within our territory, you have inviolable protection and a safe return.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n Their homes, as long as the fires of coffee remain lit, are never closed or forbidden to men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They shelter the stranger who seeks protection when circumstances turn against him, even in open country empty and abandoned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Today there is security and no dispute among us\u2014a peace deserving the gratitude of every tongue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A prosperous life by the grace of the Lord of the heavens; our country's rulers are the Brothers of Noura.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Our constitution was not codified by foreigners through imported regulations, nor made a ball for competing parties to kick toward their goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We profess Islam, the finest of religions, and our souls guard the faith with devotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n By the light of its law, decisions are formed, and within it the regulations of government are contained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Abdulaziz founded the institutions upon it until the light of justice spread throughout the Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n All are equal despite differences of class; religion tears our divisions out by the roots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is no mediation in cases before the courts; when a judgment is sealed, no one obstructs its issuance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They appointed judges to resolve our disputes, with appellate bodies and dignified courts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They provide us with every service, and we hold our king above any suggestion of shortcoming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Minarets never disappear from sight; everywhere you find mosques alive with prayer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Across the country you hear microphones echoing with the call to prayer, the iqamah, and recitation of the Qur'an.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It has developed to rival the finest civilizations, and even the most advanced countries envy our standard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Charlatans and their broadcasts cannot shake us, so long as they remain a breeding ground for acts of terrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Those astray, people of malicious intentions, are ruined\u2014and ruined is every ungrateful soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ———————<\/p>\n\n\n\n Poet Ibrahim Al-Lahim<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is Al-Oqilat, my people, and we are their descendants. How sweet their past and the remembrance of an Al-Oqilat man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Their history bears witness to their glories\u2014a people whose deeds in the pursuit of honor were beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In days of scorching winds, bare feet, and scarce provisions, crossing the empty land brought toil and terror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Caravans among them set their course toward Baghdad, and how many customers in Egypt left satisfied with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Our Al-Oqilat have a celebrated name and pioneers in Syria, a land whose bounty has no equal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Sons of Ali, our kinsmen, are like leopards\u2014my people of Buraidah and the refuge of every stranger seeking protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Today we live in happiness and prosperity beneath the shelter of just rule, whose shade lies over me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Our kings are loved and obeyed by the people; through them prosperity and restful life have flourished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A magnificent welcome to you, descendant of leaders; Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, your deeds are noble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n True to the covenant and generous in fulfilling his promise\u2014Abdullah, beloved by his people, as they tell me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Welcome upon welcome, beyond all counting; no measure can contain the greetings we offer at your arrival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We write our love forever in ink, together with gold and the most beautiful roses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And ask blessings upon Mohammed, master of all leaders, for as long as pilgrims raise their voices in praise of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ——————<\/p>\n\n\n\n The gifted poet Abdulsalam Al-Humaid\u2014may Allah protect him\u2014said during the journey from Jarradah to Qusayba:<\/p>\n\n\n\n From the point where the men of Al-Oqilat began their night journey, I proclaim my greetings to the leader of our homeland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Greetings higher than the Sarawat Mountains, higher than the twin eagles and every star that rises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And when you come to Al-Arid, seat of leadership, you find fierce men whom we have prepared against every enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Our promised king faced the crises\u2014Abdullah, trusting in his Lord, with us<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is Abu Mutib, leader in every great mission; at his right hand we saw a sword drawn for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We march beneath his command toward the goal; we are descendants of Al-Oqilat, if anyone should ask about us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And Abu Khalid, generous in his gifts, Crown Prince of the house of leadership in which we rejoice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sultan, sultan of the Arabs and of good fortune, accept our greeting and our song offered in humility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n To our Emir Faisal go abundant greetings\u2014the pride of Al-Qassim, in whom all our cities take pride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Faisal is a sword for difficult affairs; every crossing bears witness to him whenever we pass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And the second Faisal possesses beautiful qualities; goodness never misses him when his name is spoken among us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is Abu Mishal, lofty in leadership, supporter of the weak; whoever reaches his people leaves hardship behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n May you remain through every age; today you are our shelter whenever flames rise around us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Afterward, people descended from the original Al-Oqilat came to us, asking about the caravans of our forefathers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I said, \u2018Good news\u2014today, through these messages, our story will reach you in verses fashioned through our effort.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n In days gone by, when provisions ran dry, history recorded our honorable past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Buraidah takes pride in being Al-Oqilat's stopping place in the heart of the Arabian Peninsula; may it endure after us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We people of Al-Qassim are known as guides and keepers of the signs; today we travel in the footsteps of our forefathers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We are the descendants of Al-Oqilat when challenge and exchange arise; we do not begin evil, and we have always stood for good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From this place came the call, \u2018Saddle up, Al-Oqilat!\u2019 and from this place people said, \u2018Our caravan has set out.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n From this place the finest she-camels began their journey, roaming distant countries without ever losing our way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mounted upon camels bred by Al-Shararat, or traveling with the caravan to Amman\u2014how beautiful they seemed to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Or upon pure Arab mounts bred in Al-Harrah, at whose sight even the dark beasts of prey appeared subdued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n At times our journeys turned north, at times east, and at times the roads to the west exhausted us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Our forefathers labored through hard years like swords; anyone who sees the toil knows they never lived at ease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Through goodness they ruled people's hearts as true leaders abroad, men whose displeasure others strove to avoid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In this gathering I appeal to the One who knows every hidden thing, the One who counts all our scattered deeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n May He guide our path toward what is right, so that through it we reach the heights and leave ignorance behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And ask blessings upon the one God distinguished with His signs, the purest of all people whenever we assemble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ———————<\/p>\n\n\n\n The gifted poet Hamad Al-Ulayyan\u2014may Allah protect him\u2014said of the Al-Oqilat:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Al-Oqilat tightened the gear upon their mounts and swung astride between stirrup and saddle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From Najd their riding camels moved onward, their men lions in the night and wolves of the open country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They brought their merchandise to Buraidah, then sprang onward from it with purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Their finest camels went out toward Syria, and for Baghdad they headed directly to its gates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In Amman stood the animals they brought for sale; in Egypt they were merchants and earners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They never lost their way upon the routes, and robbery and plunder were never their concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Brave men whose virtues are well known\u2014security, goodness, and the honor of their clan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We remain proud of them even though fate has covered their bodies beneath the earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Today we are their successors: youth and children, elders and grey-haired men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Prosperity spread when they came under rulers who governed by God's law and His Book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Al Saud and their descendants are horsemen whenever the spears of war are raised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n How numerous their favors to the people; for their enemies they have the sword and its blade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ———————-<\/p>\n\n\n\n The poet said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is Buraidah wearing its new garment; this is Buraidah with all its lights aglow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It has lived in honor from old times into the new, its youth walking in the path of its elders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n How many clashes we entered without wavering\u2014when its men assemble, they surge like a storming sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From Najd through the traveler's night journey, Al-Oqilat stood alone; their deeds can never be concealed from us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Their encampments stretched from Syria to Upper Egypt, and they crossed lands whose farthest reaches they had never known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Upon camels and horses in the hardest times, on days of separation when danger traveled beside them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n From the farthest regions they brought fine manufactured goods, and even their coffee pots became renowned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Bedouin came to buy and the crowds increased; through cash and credit, their trade provided for their children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The stories I relate tell of men strong as iron, and their descendants today stand worthy beside Al-Nairiyah, where Al-Oqilat fulfilled the duty of hospitality\u2014a people whose presence and loyalty honor every gathering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A people who won every distinction through goodness, whose long strides have always carried them toward the heights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A people of esteem, generosity, and noble qualities; when years of giving grow lean, their own gifts never cease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n understood by everyone who reads them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A people who welcome every visitor when he arrives, maintaining the highest standard of esteem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When you come among them, you find generosity and delight, and a fire whose glow welcomes every traveler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Red coffee beans fill the stately dallahs, while fragrant blue smoke rises from the incense behind them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Generous men welcome both groups and individuals with loyalty *** These are the noble qualities you seek<\/p>\n\n\n\n We have come to you, men who make every burden light, people of Al-Qassim whose shelter protects all who enter it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Abdulaziz Al-Faisal, noble in character, unified this blessed country and firmly laid its foundations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His loyal sons rise to every great task like stars ascending in the sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Reality itself testifies to noble generosity; a man speaks his word and stands to defend it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n True manliness is like lofty mountains\u2014not everyone who longs for their summits can climb them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Yet the Sons of Al-Oqilat undoubtedly reached those heights, people of deeds who honor everyone seeking their hospitality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I came in person from the capital, Riyadh, to visit a people whose worth is dear within my heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n All fatigue and long suffering are forgotten once a person gains the satisfaction he sought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n By visiting the people of glory in their gathering, I gained something worth more than the finest gold and pounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When I represent my people upon the platforms, Qahtan is my strength, pride, and boast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I close with the purest greetings and salutations, proclaimed by a poet whose meanings are strong and came, Al-Oqilat were called capable heroes; when peace came, their company upon the road was sweet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When generosity is mentioned, you hear of coffee beans and cardamom, and dark oud turning in the incense burners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They honored the guest and slaughtered the finest camels; when you came among them, you found radiant faces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Their councils were not places for gossip and hearsay; they became renowned for poetry and remembrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There the spirit becomes content and conversation grows pleasant\u2014stories free of insult or humiliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Their companion encounters neither unfairness nor crookedness, and their aid arrives on the hardest nights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In trade they never gave short measure or broke their word; the poet Al-Ouni devoted many verses to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Among them was Al-Khalouj, the poem that flourished through its vivid images and stirred every ambition and the whole
